Increases the risks for nuclear safety: RF wants to restart 6 reactors to ZPP

Satellite images found that more than 1000 meters of trenches were dug in the area of the reservoir of the nuclear power plant. The Russian Federation wants to build a large pumping station designed to supply water to NPPs. Russian invaders decided to restart the captured Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant. Due to the undermining of the Kakhovka hydroelectric power station, the station lost access to the reservoir, which requires a new pumping station.

This is stated in the report of British military analysts of McKenzie Intelligence Services, which was created to order Greenpeace. The new analysis focuses on the study of the zone of reservoir-cooler of Zaporizhzhya NPP. He indicates that from the moment of illegal occupation of Russia in 2022 to the end of June 2024, more than 1000 meters of trenches were built in the area of the reservoir of the nuclear power plant.

In general, they are concentrated on the north and west side of the reservoir. Greenpeace is convinced that the Russian Federation intends to restart one or more nuclear reactors to the ZPP. "Such restart increases the risks for nuclear safety," the report reads. In the fall of 2023, the analysis of McKenzie Intelligence Services indicated that the Russian Federation was installed near the NPP Nikopol and the Dnieper.

"A new detailed satellite analysis shows that a large area of the nuclear power plant itself is even more militarized. There are not only trenches but also fortifications that can be used as places for the deployment It is not just that the Russian armed forces continue to threaten the safety of these events.

Greenpeace is also concerned that the significant militarization of the territory of the reservoir-cooler may be associated with Russia's future plans to restart nuclear reactors at this facility. The first details of Rosatom's plans were contained in the official document submitted by the Russian government to the IAEA on May 14, 2024. It reveals plans for the construction of a large pumping station designed to supply water to NPPs.

‍ "The Russians have concentrated most of their efforts around critically important parts of the water cooler-gateway gate, pier and northern shore. They seem to have come to the conclusion that construction along the northern shore is just a place where a pumping station can be built. The construction of trenches and fortifications can be a harbinger of a new pumping station and Russian efforts to restart the reactors at this facility, " - said in the analysis.
