Mexico President Claudia Sheinbaum said the military would fight illegal migration, drug trafficking and smuggling of weapons. Particular attention is paid to the states of Lower California, Sonora and Tamulipas, which remain the main transit points for drugs and illegals departing to the United States. Unlike the United States, there is no special border patrol in Mexico.
Since immigration employees are forbidden to wear weapons, Mexico rests on the military and the National Guard to protect the border. The Mexico Government has stated that troops have already been relocated to 18 cities and settlements along the border from the United States. US President Donald Trump is currently actively using the threat of rising duties to seek concessions.
Almost 80% of Mexican exports go to the United States, so for the country's economy, such increases could be a serious blow. Not only Mexico City but also Ottawa was under pressure from the duty. In particular, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau also agreed to strengthen control of the border with the United States. However, with China, the threats did not work. In response, Beijing announced the introduction from February 10, in response to US goods, including oil, coal and liquefied gas.
