Budapest is pro-Putin, but the question is how to get there - Sky News

Share: Prime Minister of Hungary Viktor Orbán is known for his sympathies with Russian President Vladimir Putin. That is why Budapest was not chosen as the meeting place of the presidents of Russia and the USA by chance. However, reaching Hungary could become a problem for Putin. It is not yet clear what route the Kremlin leader will choose, Sky News thinks. If he does not fly a detour over Turkey and through the Balkans, then Putin will have to cross the airspace of European countries.

And they can think about the forced landing of his plane. Among such countries, in particular, Poland, Romania and the Baltic states are mentioned. However, the British broadcaster admits that the probability of such a development is extremely small.

However, he notes that it was precisely because of such concerns that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu (whose arrest warrant has been issued by the International Criminal Court – just like Putin) adjusted his itinerary during a recent trip to the UN General Assembly in New York. Netanyahu's plane bypassed the airspace of Spain and France.

Sky News also notes that the visit to Budapest, if it does take place, will be Putin's first official trip to an EU country since the start of the full-scale war in Ukraine in February 2022. Since that time, the head of the Russian Federation did not dare to travel anywhere - of course, he visited China and North Korea, but they are not part of the ISS.

Putin visited Mongolia last year - and he was not arrested there, although this country is a member of the ISS, but it was not about a European state. Purely technically, Hungary should have arrested Putin, because it is a signatory country of the International Criminal Court, but the International Criminal Court does not have a mechanism to enforce its decisions. It will be recalled that earlier Trump announced that he would meet with Putin in Budapest.

The President of the United States made such a statement after a telephone conversation with the head of the Kremlin, Vladimir Putin. The meeting should take place in the capital of Hungary, it will be preceded by meetings of American and Russian high-ranking officials. In particular, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio will hold the first talks. Subsequently, Bloomberg wrote that the meeting in Budapest will strengthen Moscow's position.
