Not US and not China: In the "war" of advanced chips includes another country

To spread: the Japanese startup Rapidus launched and tested its pilot line for chips with a 2-nanometer node. Prior to that, there were only three companies in the world that can produce the most modern computer chips massively. IEEE SPECTRUM writes about the achievements of Rapidus. The company said that more than 200 equipment worth more than $ 300 million is now ready for the production of advanced chips.

The startup is already negotiating with potential clients, from large enterprises to startups in the field of AI. At the same time, the edition noted that Rapidus has planned the first deliveries of 2-nm chips for 2027, which could lead to the fact that the company would be left two years from three major manufacturers in the world: Taiwanese TSMC, American Intel and South Korean Samsung. These three companies are expected to start mass production of 2-nm chips in the second half of this year.

To withstand competition, Rapidus uses a different approach to production than other companies. Instead of processing large parties, the company will focus on separate plates, which will allow you to produce specialized chips for niche markets. In addition, Rapidus will optimize production with AI, using many complex sensors. "This will allow us to measure the processing of individual plates, learn from the results and quickly return the data to the system.

To increase the output, the parameters must be constantly adjusted, and these changes depend on the data obtained during processing," - explained President Rapidus Design Solutions, Henri Richard. He added that the factory uses a "revolutionary" mesh-based transportation system that allows you to move plates to any place during processing and avoid congestion that occur when equipment failure or other problems at standard factories that use linear transport systems.

The authors of the article noted that due to such a large dependence on many new Rapidus technologies, it is likely that the problems of the initial period. This can increase the time required to deliver products to customers in large volumes. However, some experts are optimistic. They predict a huge increase in AI technology, an increase in the number of CIi data centers, as well as a accompanying jump in energy consumption.
