Bakhmut's "capture" statements are not strategic: ISW (map) report

Analysts say that Yevgeny Prigogin is trying to mislead the Ukrainian military with their statements. The Armed Forces continue to deny the "successes" of the invaders. Fighting continues for the city, as Anna Malyar noted. The statements of the Russian Federation and the owner of the Wagner PEC Yevgeny Prigogine about the conquest of Bakhmut are not of strategic importance. This is stated in the report of analysts from the American Institute of War Study (ISW) of May 20.

According to experts, Russians in the Donbass play their game, and all statements about the removal of "Wagner" from Bakhmut are one of the attempts to mislead the Armed Forces. In addition, Russian troops are extremely exhausted and cannot create a bridgehead for further offensive. Therefore, it is not necessary to trust the words of the occupiers, as analysts point out. "The victory of Prigogine over the rest of Bakhmut, which he declares is purely symbolic, even if it is true.

The last few city quarters of Eastern Bakhmut, which, according to Prigogine, were captured by the Wagner group, are not important from tactical , from an operational point of view. Their capture does not give the Russian troops a prompt territory to continue offensive operations or some particularly strong position from which it would be possible to defend themselves against possible Ukrainian counterattacks, " - the message reads.

Particular attention is worthy of the factor that the head of the Wagner PEC Yevhen Prigogin announced the intentions of his troops to withdraw from the city on May 25 for rest, and such statements may indicate that they do not think about further promotion from Bakhmut. Analysts also believe that to create adequate defense or consolidate their "achievements" in Bakhmut, Russians will not be able to hold counter -attacks by May 25.

Ukrainian troops are still in chrome and Ivanovsky and were fighting with the invaders in Bakhmut and nearby. As of Sunday morning, May 21, battles for Bakhmut do not stop, and the enemy tries to take active offensive actions that are unsuccessful. Deputy Minister of Defense Anna Malyar said in her Telegram channel on May 20, that serious fighting continues for the city. The situation is critical, but the Ukrainian military keeps defense and do not allow the enemy to seize the city.

The speaker of the Eastern Group of the Armed Forces Colonel Sergei Cherevaty in his comment to Reuters also denies the information that Bakhmut was allegedly lost. "This is not true. Our units are fighting in Bakhmut," the message reads. It is worth noting that official information on the situation at the front is published by the General Staff and government officials.
