"Academic looting": Russian scientists are massively stealing the dissertations of Ukrainians - investigation

To spread: scientists in the Russian Federation translate and publish under their names parts of Ukrainian dissertations that are freely available. The number of such cases increased sharply after Russia's full -scale war against Ukraine. The translated plagiarism of Russian scientists was told by scientists and journalists who left Russia and created the media of the Academic T-Invariant.

According to the authors of the investigation, the surge of the phenomenon of "academic looting" caused the creation of large language models and improving the quality of automatic translation, which coincided with the beginning of a full -scale war in Ukraine.

Recently, it was dedicated to the peculiarities of the development of the digital economy by the article of Doctor of Economics, Professor and Honored Worker of Science of the Republic of Dagestan Sergiy Dokholyan in the journal of "Izvestia Cabardio-Balkar Scientific Center of RES" was a literal translation of part of the dissertation. At the same time, investigators found other fragments of the same Ukrainian dissertation in the "work" of co -authors from Chechen and Dagestan Universities.

Journalists suggested that a third party was involved in plagiarism, which prepared the texts of publications in advance and then sold them to the authors. To determine the scale of translated plagiarism in the works of Russian T-Invariant scientists, with the help of modern means of natural language processing (NLP) compared more than 150 thousand Ukrainian-language dissertations with more than three million Russian-language publications from 2012 to 2022.

Of these, more than 100 Russian-language publications contained large-scale borrowings from Ukrainian works and were published later than the date of defense of the dissertation. From this hundred, investigators were expelled by authors who were affiliated with Ukrainian universities and 58 Russian -language works with plagiarism remained. Among them are two authors from Belarus and one at a time from Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan and China.

Other scientists-from different regions of Russia, from Vladivostok to St. Petersburg. Among the authors are students, graduate students, associate professors and professors, as well as the Vice -Rector (from the Russian State Humanities University) and the Rector (from Vitebsk State University in Belarus). We will remind, in June the service of external intelligence of Ukraine reported that scientists flee with the Russian Federation at a high rate, which were not even in the 1990s.
