NATO aircraft intercepted Russian fighters over the Baltic Sea (video)

NATO fighters have intercepted Russian military aircraft over the last day. The French fighters of Mirage 2000-5 on Thursday, February 29, were intercepted by two Russian Su-30Ms over the Baltic Sea, and subsequently An-72. This was reported on March 1 by NATO Air Command on the social network X. A little later, the French planes also intercepted the Russian An-72 in the international space north of Poland.

French military aircraft are located in a number of NATO member states as part of the NATO Air Police Mission aimed at the safety of the Alliance airspace. These missions were strengthened after Russia's full -scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. As reported by the General Staff of the Armed Forces of France, on February 27, France also raised fighter jets to intercept the Russian military aircraft. It is about IL-20, which was located off the coast of Estonia.

Russian military aircraft regularly fly from the mainland of Russia to Kaliningrad and back, which means that such actions are quite common in the region. NATO aircraft earlier annually made about 400 interceptions of Russian aircraft. In 2024, it became known about a number of bilateral security agreements concluded with the countries of the European Union and NATO: with the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Italy, Denmark, etc.
