Subscribe not to miss the latest and most intrusive news from the world of science! Divers, accompanied by instructors, can now explore a huge collection of amphorae, which extends to an incredible 25 meters along the seabed.
Previously, archaeologists and persons with special permits for fears about looting had access to these underwater antiquities. Now amateur divers can go down into the sea and meet with the legendary "perister". This shipwreck, named after the neighboring deserted island, offers a truly extraordinary experience, like a trip in time, since it dates from about 425 BC.
The opening of the sunken ship took place in 1985, when the fisherman first came across an ancient vessel near the rocky west shore of Peristers. At a depth of 28 meters lay a large sales ship, which probably came from Athens, and found its death. Loaded by thousands of amphorae with wine from Mendi, the ancient city of Halkidiki, and Peparhos, known today as Skopelos, he witnessed the winery regions of antiquity.
The shipwreck, which was of great importance for classical antiquity, exceeded all expectations, finding the presence of large vessels in size 12 by 25 meters, which were previously considered to be first built in the Roman Empire. The director of the Greek Efortide of the Underwater Antiquities of the Kalamara emphasized the importance of the shipwreck, stating that it was a documentary confirmation of the existence of such vessels in the second half of the 5th century BC.
It should be noted that the ship has surprisingly maintained its structural integrity. The load of Amphor remained intact, located in layers that reflect their original placement in the hold of the ship, which gives an idea of the shape of the vessel. Kalamara explained: "This is a really unique experience for visitors who see a classic era ship.
" The research of the sunken ship was conducted by archaeologists and staff of Efortau's antiquities of the Ministry of Culture, who coordinated the public opening of the place. Due to the large number of amphorae, surprisingly well -preserved state and stunning attractiveness of the surrounding virgin waters located within the protected area of the Alonissoso National Marine Park, the sunken ship "overlook" will capture the imagination of every experienced diver.
However, the attractiveness of the mysterious underwater world is not limited to diving enthusiasts. Visitors to Alonisos have the opportunity to evaluate the extraordinary sight of the sunken ship without even wetting. On the magical alley of the city of Alonisos, the Center for Public Information provides comprehensive information about the history of ancient ship accidents.
