South Korea fighters flew to the interception of Russian aircraft: Russian attaché "called on the carpet"

To spread: several PCS aircraft entered the distinctive area above the Eastern Sea, approaching South Korea airspace at a distance of 20 km. However, the planes did not respond to numerous radios of South Korean dispatchers. The Ministry of National Defense of South Korea summoned to Seoul a Russian military attaché, Colonel Mykola Marchenko, in order to express an official protest after Russian military aircraft were repeatedly entered into the Kadiz).

This was reported on March 20 by Yonhap with reference to the country's Ministry of Defense. According to the Ministry, on March 20, several Russian aircraft entered Kadiz above the Eastern Sea, approaching South Korea airspace at a distance of 20 kilometers. The planes did not respond to numerous radios of South Korean dispatchers. In response, Seoul raised the fighter jets for monitoring and escort.

This is the eighth such incident since March 11, which is concerned in South Korea for growing Russian activity near the peninsula. The South Korean side stressed that repeated flights of Russian aircraft without message are unacceptable and create the risk of military escalation. Therefore, Seoul demanded that Moscow take measures to prevent such incidents.

Experts point out that although the air defense area is not a sovereign airspace, states require foreign aircraft to identify themselves to ensure security. The South Korean military also reported that a similar incident happened a few days earlier during Russian exercises. The types of aircraft are not disclosed, but regular invasions make Seoul watch more closely for Russian military activity in the region.
