To spread: the scale of joint military exercises of Russia and Belarus

Russian Federation and Belarus sharply reduced the scale of common military exercises: ISW explained the reason

To spread: the scale of joint military exercises of Russia and Belarus "West-2025", planned for the fall of this year, is significantly reduced. Such changes are related to the war in Ukraine. About it writes the American Institute of War Study (ISW). It is reported that Russia and Belarus not only reduced the scale of exercises, but also suffered key maneuvers away from the western border of Belarus. Such a step, according to experts, has rather demonstrative than practical.

Analysts suggest that such a step aims to distract from the limited military resource of Russia outside the war zone in Ukraine. According to them, Minsk could not make this decision without the participation of Moscow. Earlier, Belarusian officials stated that at least 13,000 servicemen were planned to participate in the West-2025 exercises. However, according to analysts, the scale of the event was reduced because the bulk of the Russian forces were involved in the war against Ukraine.

The ISW reminded that earlier the Russian authorities suddenly abolished the training "West-2023". Analysts believe that the reason for this decision was the needs of Russia for live power and weapons for war against Ukraine. We will remind, on May 29 the spokesman of the State Tax Service Andriy Demchenko stated that in September the danger on the border with Belarus could increase through her joint military exercises with Russia.

It was also reported that on May 28, the Secretary of Secretary of the Council of Belarus Oleksandr Volfovich stated that the Russian complex "Oreshnik" will be placed in Belarus by the end of 2025 and already identified the necessary places for him. Preparation with Russia goes according to plan. Earlier, Sky News military analyst Michael Clark considers the Belarusian army ineffective: out of the official 50,000, only about 15,000 are capable but have low training and poor equipment.
