UAV protection: BMP-3 is modernized in the Russian Federation, taking into account the experience of war in Ukraine

The chief designer of the Special Design Bureau of Mechanical Engineering (SKBM) Sergey Abdulov told this in an interview with RT. The designer has admitted that BMP-3 in modern battle conditions faced a serious threat in the form of UAVs and American FGM-148 Javelin. Therefore, the occupiers decided to strengthen the protection against these means of damage. "In modern combat, unmanned aerial vehicles are a very high danger for modern armored vehicles.

We work to give BMP-3 the opportunity to detect drones and protect them from them. We also work out different options for protecting the upper hemisphere from the Javelin missiles," Abdulov said. He did not specify the "protection of the upper hemisphere". According to Defense Express experts, perhaps Russian designers will install the so -called "barbecue", which already in the factory conditions they equip their tanks.

In addition, the Russian military wants to change the concept of applying the fire capabilities of the BMP-3. Given the experience of war in Ukraine, they came to the conclusion that the 100-mm gun of the launcher 2A70 can allegedly conduct an effective fire from closed positions, not just a direct fire. But for this purpose it is necessary to install new ballistic calculators on the machine for accurate firing at the hinged trajectory, which will simplify the process of adjusting the fire.

According to Abdulov, the BMP-3 is now equipped with an advanced mechanism for feeding the shells in the gun and new fragmentation shells 3OF19 "cherry", which have a maximum range of 7 km. "Given the experience of adjusting the fire from closed firing positions, we came to understand the need to use regular drones and new ballistic computers," the constructor stressed.
