"Tested in battles": the EU wants to deploy the armed forces on the eastern borders to deter the Russian Federation

Share: European Defense Commissioner Andryus Kubilyus said that after the potential end of the war with the Russian Federation, the Ukrainian army will be able to help contain the Russian threat on the EU's eastern borders. He noted that the Defense Forces of Ukraine have already been tested in battles with the Russians.

Politico writes about the threat of war between the Russian Federation and Europe with reference to the statements of the Commissioner for Defense of the European Union Andryus Kubilius, the former Prime Minister of Lithuania during a conference in Vilnius on November 17. According to him, if the war in Ukraine is ended by a peace agreement, the Ukrainian military can help protect the eastern borders of the EU from Russia.

"It would be good if the battle-tested Ukrainian army, after the establishment of peace in Ukraine, would be present in all border countries, starting with the Baltic region and Lithuania, together with the German brigade and rotating American battalions," Kubilyus said. Journalists noted that this prospect remains remote now, as the President of the Russian Federation, Vladimir Putin, does not show interest in a compromise.

At the same time, Politico writes that the Ukrainian military is the most experienced in Europe and could become invaluable allies, and reminds that the prospects of Ukraine joining the North Atlantic Alliance (NATO) have disappeared due to the resistance of the United States and other allies.

Kubilyus also emphasized that the deployment of the Ukrainian military will not undermine the dispatch of an armored brigade from Germany to Lithuania, the presence of American troops in the region and the provision of joint defense in accordance with Article 5 of the NATO Agreement. It will be recalled that the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, suggested in a letter to the leaders of the European Union that the war in Ukraine could end in 2026.
