Germany modernizes the Iris-T Block II rocket: what value it matters for Ukraine

The development of this rocket system can lead to similar improvements in the anti-aircraft missiles of Iris-T SLM complexes, which are in service with defense forces. The German Defense Company Diehl Defense 31 has signed a contract for modernization and mass production of the Air-Air-to-Bleck Air-Tent Block II Air-Air-Air-Air-Air-air missile. The military department approved the financing of the project at the end of December 2024, allocated 25 million euros for it, reports Army Recognition.

It is noted that the modernization of the rocket is intended to increase its combat efficiency. According to Diehl Defense Chief Director Harald Bushk, who performed at ILA 2024 in Berlin, modernization includes: the main characteristics, including 25 km away and the weight of 11. 4 kg, will probably remain unchanged. However, improved sensors and electronics will allow the rocket to respond faster to threats and more effectively.

The IRIS-T Aviation missile was developed under the European Cooperation Program. It can be used by various combat aircraft, including Eurofighter Typhoon, Gripen, F-16, EF-18, F-5, KF-21 and Tornado. In total, more than 5,000 missiles of this type were delivered to customers from different countries. In addition to aviation use, the rocket is used in the IRIS-T SLS air defense system, which, in particular, is in service with Ukraine's defense forces.

Viewers say that the development of Iris-T Block II can lead to similar improvements in the anti-aircraft missiles of the IRIS-T SLM and Iris-T SLX family missiles. So the SLM version, which is used by Ukraine's air defense, has a range of up to 40 km, and the latest SLX - up to 80 km. Already, IRIS-T SLX has integrated technologies similar to the future Block II.
