Harpoon Block IIU is equipped with updated hardware and software, improved guidance and management systems, as well as new components borrowed from JDAM and Standoff Land Attack Missile. During the tests, the rocket demonstrated a stable movement, the correct operation of navigation and management systems, and the claimed aerodynamic characteristics. According to Boeing representatives, the update will allow to extend the life and production of Harpoon, maintaining its need in the world weapons.
The authors of the material point out that Harpoon remains one of the most massive anti -ship missiles that are most used in the world. Since its adoption in 1977, it has been repeatedly modernized and arrived at dozens of countries. The previous version, Harpoon Block II, was exported to India, South Korea, Qatar and Australia. Thus, the modernization of the rocket was carried out against the background of increasing demand for anti -ship missiles and the outdation of the weapons system.
The main purpose of weapons is the defeat of surface ships of different class. The rocket can be launched from different carriers: aircraft (AGM-84), ships (RGM-84), submarines (UGM-84), and later modifications (Slam and Slam-ER) were able to attack and land targets. There is a version that Harpoon was also involved in the Russian-Ukrainian war. In 2024, during a blow to the Russian fleet in the occupied Sevastopol, the Commune ship was damaged.
