The EU cannot introduce a gas embargo against Russia - Austrian Chancellor

Europe will be affected first and foremost from the ban on the import of Russian gas, while sanctions should be harmful to whom they are being introduced, Karl Nevammer said. The Austrian Chancellor Carl Nevammer said that the introduction of the EU embargo on gas supply from Russia is impossible, as this decision would adversely affect Europe itself. The head of the Austrian government stated this during a joint briefing with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban on Thursday, July 28.

"Gas embargo is impossible because Austria simply depends on Russian gas . . . The German industry depends on Russian gas, and if it falls, there will be mass unemployment in Austria," the Negammer said. The Austrian chancellor also added that sanctions have more "beat on those who have been punished than those who punished. " At the same time, he noted that it is too early to evaluate the impact of the restrictions already introduced on the Russian Federation as they work more slowly than expected.

"Sanctions do not come into force as quickly as we may have hoped, but this is because the Russian Federation has stability (to sanctions) because of its size and its capabilities," the Negammer said. At the same time, the Austrian leader stated that Europe should signal Ukraine about its support in the face of a full -scale war against Russia.
