Russian Lukoil announced a force majeure at one of its fields

Share: The Russian oil company "Lukoil" reported that a force majeure occurred at one of the largest Iraqi oilfields, Zahidna Kurna-2. It is noted that Western sanctions against the company could have led to this. In October, British and American sanctions were imposed against Lukoil and Rosneft. After that, Iraq suspended all cash and oil payments to the companies. Reuters writes about it.

The publication emphasizes that on Tuesday, November 4, "Lukoil" sent an official letter to the Ministry of Oil of Iraq, where it was reported that force majeure circumstances do not allow continuing work in the usual mode at the Zahidna Kurna-2 field. At the same time, if the causes of force majeure are not eliminated within six months, the Lukoil company will probably stop production and completely abandon the project.

Last week, due to sanctions, the Iraqi state oil company SOMO canceled the shipment of three batches of oil from the field. In addition, the amount of oil allocated for in-kind payments to Lukoil for November - about 4 million barrels - was canceled.

At the same time, the representative of the Ministry of Oil reported that until the changes in the contracts that would provide a method of payment to the accounts of companies that are not subject to sanctions, Iraq will not work with companies that are subject to US sanctions. Western Kurna-2 is one of the largest oil fields in the world. It is the most valuable a foreign asset of the Lukoil company. It is located 65 kilometers (40 miles) northwest of the southern port of Basra.
