Czech Republic is dissatisfied with the Caesar SAU contrary to the Armed Forces reviews: why Prague refuses purchases

Extend: Program of purchase of 155 mm self-propelled artillery installations Caesar 8 × 8 on the Tatra chassis in the Czech Republic was at risk of disruption. According to the local press, it is not only a delay in supply, but also about the possible complete cancellation of the contract, which can cause a significant blow to the Czech defense.

The Czech Republic has conducted a technical assessment of documentation and concluded that a number of critical characteristics of Caesar may not meet their requirements. This was reported on July 10 by ECHO24. In particular, firing range, fire efficiency and interchangeability of ammunition within NATO standards are mentioned. Such estimates seem quite strange, given that Caesar SAUs are actively used in Ukraine, where they are highly appreciated for mobility, automation and fire power.

A contract for 52 installations was signed in 2021 worth 8. 5 billion CZK (EUR 335 million). 7. 2 billion kroons have already been paid from this amount and the supply has been planned since 2026. However, the political context can play a key role: the Czech Ministry of Defense explicitly states that the agreement has been initiated by the previous government.

In addition, the possible cancellation of the program will hit two adjacent projects: thus, the entire architecture of modernization of Czech artillery, not just a contract with the French manufacturer KNDS France (Nexter), was threatened. In this regard, the Ministry of Defense of the country has already sent its comments to the manufacturer.
