Iran refused to recognize Crimea in the Russian agreement with the Russian Federation for the next 20 years - the media

At the same time, Russia recognizes Iran's right to three islands in the Persian Gulf for which permanent claims are made by the United Arab Emirates. According to journalists, the strategic partnership agreement has been preparing for years. On January 17, Russia and Iran will sign a bilateral strategic partnership agreement that regulates relations between the two countries over the next 20 years and in which Iran does not recognize Crimea - the territory of Russia.

About it writes Middle East Eye with reference to an informed Iranian official. The Iranian official reported that the project of the agreement with Russia was completed after 20-30 rounds of negotiations for four to five years.

The agreement consists of 47 articles concerning a wide range of issues, including technology cooperation, information and cybersecurity, peaceful nuclear energy, terrorism, regional cooperation, environmental issues, Caspian Sea, and the fight against money laundering and organized crime. Other provisions relate to defense and military cooperation, such as training and joint initiatives, although specific details will require further agreements and contracts.

One of the key points of the Covenant concerns territorial integrity, which is of particular importance for Iran because of the constant claims of the United Arab Emirates on the three Persian Gulf Islands, which Iran has been controlling since 1971. "This provision, however, does not include the recognition of Crimea that Russia has seized in Ukraine in 2014, or other disputed regions," the material reads.

The Iranian official also noted that the agreement includes an item that forbids both parties to support or assist aggressors against one of the parties, and to allow their territories to be used as bases for such actions. In addition, both countries undertake to resist illegal extraterritorial sanctions, including secondary US sanctions, and support each other in international forums. Journalists also emphasized that the agreement will require the approval of the Iranian Parliament.
