As noted in the edition, hydrogen, especially low -carbon white hydrogen, is considered a promising alternative to traditional fossil fuel. It is widely used worldwide against the background of the desire to use "green" energy. According to the portal, the deposits of Eastern Siberia, especially such as Chayandinsky and Koventin, contain not only methane but also hydrogen. It is formed in natural conditions and together with other gases deep underground.
If methane is produced purposefully for the market, hydrogen can be a by -product of this process. At the International Conference on Water Energy in October 2024, Gazprom CEO Konstantin Romanov said that the company was already studying how this natural hydrogen is produced. At the same time, the publication noted that the idea of obtaining natural hydrogen through Gazprom has a number of technical and economic barriers.
In particular, it is a lack of a stable hydrogen marketing market at the world level and the high cost of production. In addition, the available capacities and equipment on the gas fields of Eastern Siberia are configured for gas production, not hydrogen. The author of the article emphasized that if Gazprom changes his approach to the use of technologies, focusing on hydrogen production, then Russia can "block the gas of the world".
The Russian Federation is one of the leading natural gas producers, so the transition to hydrogen production will affect how Moscow will work with its gas fields. This, in turn, can mean reducing Russian gas exports. "Although the production of natural hydrogen is currently in its infancy, there is no doubt that this resource can be an important place in the international energy balance in the future," - summed up in the publication.
